Penis Size

How can I tell if my baby’s penis is the normal size for his age?

Dr. Greene’s Answer:

In determining penis size, the “stretched penile length” is far more important than the “relaxed length.” To evaluate size, simply stretch the penis gently and measure from the bone at the base all the way to the tip. Be sure to depress the surrounding fat pad to get all the way to the base. Here are the normal values:

      Thanks for writing in.

A stretched penis and an erect penis are NOT the same thing. Here are Dr. Greene’s directions for measuring the stretched penis: “To evaluate penis size, stretch the penis gently and measure from the bone at the base all the way to the tip. Be sure to depress the surrounding fat pad to get all the way to the base.”

      I hope that helps.

My son was born with a hypospadius and had it repaired at 7 months old. A small pocket formed underneath so it was repaired by the same surgeon at age 3. My husband and I are concerned his penis isn’t growing because it looks the same as it did when he was a toddler. Sometimes he’s erect when he wakes up in the middle of the night to pee and it seems like a normal size for his age but since he’s our first child and only boy, we don’t know what’s normal. My husband is losing his mind thinking it will never grow and he’ll never have a normal life. Is this true? Should we be concerned?

Hi, I’m almost 12 years old and the size of my penis is about 6.5 cm. My friend, who had long ago reached the age of 12 is almost twice bigger penis than me. While my other friend who has nearly 11 years has a little bit smaller penis than me. The older friend is lower, and younger taller than me, oddly enough, is not it? None of us had entered puberty. I would like to ask whether the size of my penis normal? If you are not sure you should increase it (if so, which way?) Or should still wait? Also, I will present to my second skin separated from the glans and beneath it, while the menu is not separated at the bottom of the glans. Is this perhaps the reason of differences in size? Is there a way to separate the skin of the penis? Thank you in advance.

At 12, you could be pre-pubescent, in the middle of puberty or all the way through puberty. Your stage of puberty will determine what is normal.

The list provided to others describes how to tell what stage of puberty you are in and based on that, what size is normal.

      I hope that helps.

    • Hello Attila,

Thanks for writing in. Here is the answer to your question:

      1. The average stretched length of the penis before puberty is somewhere between 2.1 and 2.9 inches.
      2. The average stretched length of the adult penis, after puberty is complete, is between 4.6 and 5.8 inches (though a more recent study of 6200 boys, mostly white, from Bulgaria, put the average at 3.1 to 4.3 inches).
      3. During puberty it is normal for the stretched length to range between 3 and 4.5 inches.
      4. It can be normal in our culture to begin puberty as early as 10 years old or as late as 14.9 years old.
      5. Puberty is NOT set by your age, but by your Tanner Stage (the system doctors use to evaluate development during puberty).
      6. If you are not in the normal range for your stage of development, or if your development is before age 10 or after age 14.9, it’s wise to discuss this with your pediatrician.
      7. During puberty it is recommended that you have a physical exam once a year. Unless you are particularly concerned or are far outside the guidelines above, you can bring this up at your next annual exam.

      I hope that helps.

I recently decided to go ahead and transition. Slowly but surely I’m changing my life. I wear women’s clothing, makeup, and am seeing a therapist and psych dr to assist w transitioning. Since I was young I wished I woke up a girl. My parents found via pedal Dr that I had micro penis, and it basically hasn’t grown since I was 4-5 yo. Well my jr and HS years sucked, but I also learned to embrace it. I learned wearing panties is something I felt normal in. Recently decided to , w a female friend to be put into charity, stop masturbation, using estrogen lotion, rolling my penis in my ballsack, wearing tight panties, and I lost over an inch, and girth. The girl whose “dressing” me, took pics last night and it’s barely quarter of an inch. She said shaved, it looked like a newborn baby’s, and it does, she never knew a grown man could have one so tiny. Have you heard of this, and will this eventually effect my vagina if I go full sex change?

Hi, when you say stretched does that mean erected? And when I am not erected my size is almost nothing. I am twelve years old. It almost folds in when I am soft.

    • John,

Good question. Here’s the answers — no, the stretched is not the same as the erect penis. Dr. Greene says, “To evaluate penis size, stretch the penis gently and measure from the bone at the base all the way to the tip. Be sure to depress the surrounding fat pad to get all the way to the base.”

If your penis is really “almost nothing” it would be smart to have a physical exam and discuss this with your doctor.

      Hope that helps!

You can follow these steps to determine if your penis size is normal for your stage of development:

At 12, you could be in several different stages of development, so it’s tough to say where you are regarding normal size. You can follow the steps below to determine how twhat stage of development you are in and to determine if your size falls in the normal range.

        1. The average stretched length of the penis before puberty is somewhere between 2.1 and 2.9 inches.

    • Luey,

In the medical literature, the sizes are based on the stretched length. To measure the stretched penis length, stretch the penis gently and measure from the bone at the base all the way to the tip. Be sure to depress the surrounding fat pad to get all the way to the base. Once you’ve done that, follow these steps to determine where you fall developmentally:

Unless you particularly concerned or are far outside the guidelines above, you can bring this up at your annual exam.

At 13, this may be completely normal. The thing to consider is your Tanner Stage. Puberty is NOT set by your age, but by your Tanner Stage (the system doctors use to evaluate development during puberty).

Here’s what you need to know to be able to determine if your development is on track:

Unless you particularly concerned or are far outside the guidelines above, you can bring this up at your annual exam.

According to Dr. Greene, “In determining size, the “stretched penile length” is far more important than the “relaxed length.” To evaluate penis size, stretch the penis gently and measure from the bone at the base all the way to the tip. Be sure to depress the surrounding fat pad to get all the way to the base.”

My son just turned 4 and in the last 6 months it kinda looks like it’s either stopped growing or growing backwards I mean inwards it’s like 1 and almost half another inch soft when he has to pee it looks like how I would picture it looking regularly I mean his 2 year old brother is almost same size. Will his penis grow to his body soon I’m worried thank you.

The size you stated is just larger than normal for pre-puberty. Depending on your Tanner Stage, you may be a little behind. It’s worth bringing up at your next regularly scheduled physical.

At 13, almost 14, you should have a regular physical once a year.

    Hello,

I’m a mom of two boys, a 2-year-old and a 6-year-old. My younger boy’s penis is bigger than that of his big brother’s and I can already see that it is quite open while his brother’s is still very tight. It worries me… a lot! We are thinking of having him circumcised but I’m worried about it too! Will it eventually open up should we leave him uncircumcised?

Definitely leave your sons intact and not circumcised. Circumcising removes the most erroneous zone on a boy and also decreases his length! Only amputate if there is rampant disease present. Your sons are healthy and need no cutting.

When my son was born, the urologist said he had a slight twist in his penis. We had to decide whether or not to go ahead with the circumcision. She said it was very minor, only enough where she felt that she should make us aware before proceeding with the procedure. Now he is 10 and his penis in extremely small. We have a 3 year old who’s penis is larger (I think). I try not to oogle either, but I am wondering if I should be concerned.

I see you’ve left a series of questions here. All questions wait in moderation until a live person has an opportunity to read them and make sure they’re reasonable comments or questions. You see, some people think it’s okay to write whatever they think and post it on a web site. In an attempt to raise the level of conversation on the web, we don’t post those comments.

      To answer this question:

      1. You say you are 12. The size you stated is already an adult size as stated in the post above.
      2. If you’re worried about it being too big (which is not what most boys worry about), then you can see this post for a guide on how to tell how much more you may grow.
      3. The post above also says, “If you are searching on information about penis size during puberty, please go to Penis Size During Puberty for your answer.”

Adham, I hope this eases your fear, but you will have to actually read and learn to get your full answer.

My son is 10 years old and his penis does not seem to have grown since he was a baby. I did see a doctor a few years ago and he told me not to worry it would grow later. His testicles have grown but not his penis and I am worried this is going to cause issues for him later. Also his skin does not pull back so one doctor once told me he will have to be circumcised later. Except for a few times as an infant he has never had an erection. I thought even as little boys it was normal sometimes and is this something I should be worried about and could all three issues be related. Thanks.

Having a circumcised penis is a medical or even religious decision that your mother & Doctor make at birth.. Sex works the same way whether you are circumcised or not.
However, if you are referring to the “feel” of sex with an uncircumcised penis, then I wouldn’t actually know about that. I’m sure there is another forum to discuss it though.

I hope you have seen the post that we published to address Penis Size During Puberty. If you haven’t, read it now as it will answer some of your questions.

All boys and girls develop at different rates. This means some will be behind others in their development. Regardless of whether you are on track or not, your concern over your penis size is enough reason to discuss this with you pediatrician or family doctor. You can bring it up at your next appointment. Your doctor will likely do a physical exam and can tell you if you are the appropriate size for your stage of development or not and provide direction if you need further help.

          Hi Kelly,

Your post was a bit confusing.. Is he below or higher? If he was born early then that doesn’t necessarily mean that his growth won’t be on target. However, if he is having tests done like you said, then most likely another doctor will be able to give you a result to those said tests.

    • At 14, with your strong feelings, it is wise to discuss this with your pediatrician. At your age, you are due to have a physical exam each year. Typically your pediatrician will ask your parent to wait in another room for your exam and he* will ask you if you have any concerns that you’d like to discuss in private. He will be able to help you.

If you don’t get a regular check up, ask your mom or dad to make an appointment for you to be checked. If that’s not possible, the next time you’re sick with something like a flu bug, use that as a reason to see your doctor — then ask to talk to him about something else. That happens frequently. But, I’d suggest, if you’re going use this tactic, be sure to tell him first thing that there is something else you want to discuss so you don’t run out of time.

      Hope that helps.

*I say “he” here, not because women don’t make great pediatricians, but because I’m assuming you’d be more comfortable talking to a man and likely have a male pediatrician.

My son is 2 yrs old and I am concerned about his penis. When he was born, it was barely visible. His pediatrician insists nothing is wrong. The length is borderline based on the chart above, just under 1 and a quarter inch stretched out. But the circumference or thickness is much smaller than usual. It’s the thickness of a standard #2 pencil. What other doctor could give us a second opinion since the pediatrician doesn’t see a problem? Thank you,

I am an 11 year old male with an oddly feminine voice, even for my age, the girls have deeper voices than me, and the people around me have noticed an odd stench around my sweat.

I stand at 5 foot one inch in height and my penis is [REDACTED BY MODERATOR] and the slightest of touches/attractive feminine thoughts/scenes makes it hard. Is this small or is it average and is this overall normal or abnormal?

    • It’s not unusual for boy’s voices to be higher in pitch at age 11, but the combination of an oddly feminine voice and “an odd stench around my sweat” would be worth bringing up at your next pediatrician’s visit.

Hi Dr Greene, I love your website first of all. My son just turned 9 months old. When he was born, the doctor noticed that his penis size was pretty long while he was circumsizing him. However now both genitals look small. Can it be possible? I don’t really know what small is but it doesn’t look long and the tip is kind of covered with the top skin. My boy is very tall and slim. 9.7 kg and 75 cm. The pediatrician said it looks a little small. I have a thyroid disease. Can it be related to that, or circumsion, or nothing to worry about? I would be very happy if you could write me back please. Many thanks!!! Regards.

    Hi

I have a urgent question . Please help me . I was born in 1993 Sep and now I’m 22 years old . My penis size is around 1.5″ Flaccid (non erect) and 5.5″ (erect) . I think my flaccid size is very very abnormal and really it looks like a very young boy’s penis whereas my brothers size and form is very different and actually they have normal size. I remember that since I was 12 years old until now my penis size and form not change in flaccid shape. What is the main reason? Is there a treatment ? Oh I should tell you since childhood I like to put a pillow or something like it between my legs so that it press my penis and testicle and this was very pleasant for me during sleep and rest. I think doing this about 10 years prevents enlargement of my penis. Is it related to my problem or not?

    Thanks a lot …

Hello, don’t worry at all. You will have done yourself no damage. Your size is average when erect, not a problem and flaccid state is fine too – you are a grower. I personally am quite small when flaccid, but grow to a good size when roused. You are absoutely fine and should not worry.

    • Hi Brett,

Thank you so much for your comment. You raise an interesting and complex question. I must admit, we’ve been struggling to find the right balance. Here is the background —

When Dr. Greene wrote this answer he was addressing the parent of a baby who was concerned about a medical condition. As a pediatrician, this is a question he gets routinely and a valid one. Recently we started getting comments from a lot of adolescent boys asking about their own penis size. We moderate all comments and have guidelines, for instance we don’t post hateful comments, comments that call other people names, spam, or anything pornographic. We do allow differences of opinion and respect multiple points of view. Where do these new questions fall within our guidelines?

Our first thought was we needed to update our chart on penis size so these boys could just look on the chart and have their answer. You may have noticed that the chart skips from 11 years-old to adult without data. Interestingly when Dr. Greene did the research to find the answers he found there was no trusted data on normal penis size in adolescent boys. That meant we couldn’t just add to the chart.

What we have done in the short run was to carefully read each comment and try to decide the intent of the boy writing in. Was this a joke? Was it pornographic? Was it an honest concern? Did it make fun of anyone else? We aren’t perfect (that is certain), but based on these reasons, we do not publish many of the comments made on this post.

So why would we publish them at all? By the time kids reach puberty most have been exposed to photos, typically online or in the media, that show the human body in unrealistic proportions. Typically these photos are sexual in nature, but not always. It is our hopes that in the absence of scientific data, by allowing adolescent boys to post their honest question about the body part they feel most insecure, they will see that they are not abnormal. We know the sizes they post can not be trusted due to differences in measurement techniques and the human tendency to make ourselves appear better in other’s eyes.

We would love your feedback. After you hear our reasoning, do you still think we should delete all these comments?

Thanks again for voicing your concern.

There’s a large range of what is “normal” for penis size. They grow at different rates for different people. Plus, I’m a woman telling you that penis size doesn’t really matter to most women, and who knows better than a woman?

  141. Danika

Yes, yes, of course. That’s very natural. And remember that no matter what your friends or other kids at school say, penis size does not have anything to do with your worth. It’s not a bad thing to be below average, or above average. Penises (and vaginas) come in many different shapes, colors, and sizes, but if you’re experiencing pain or abnormally strong, stinky smells coming from that area (it’s natural for it to smell not-so-great sometimes, though. Just make sure to clean yourself regularly), please, please, please know that going through the embarrassment of letting your parent(s) or guardian(s) know about your issue will be so much easier than dealing with what could potentially end up as a life-long issue that could cause problems with self esteem and relationships and/or result in continuous pain.

But seriously, I know for absolute sure that penis size does not tie into your value or worth. It’s completely okay to look different from other guys in pictures or videos, because they were specifically selected because they match what we, today, think of as having the ideal penis. Believe me this, though. M a n y, if not most, penises (and testicles – some hang lower than others. Some are larger or smaller than others) look very different from those that are currently put in pictures and videos, and as long as you are healthy, there is nothing bad about the way that your penis (and the rest of your body) looks.

I’m not sure if you measured your penis correctly as many of you young kids in this forum state lengths that I can’t even achieve and I’m in the upper area of my age group. I’m mid 14 and I’m 4.8 inches. I have done the research.

You people are all lying. I don’t think that you guys know how to correctly measure your penis. I am turning 15 in October 2015 and I’m 4.8 inches. I have done the research. I am in the above average for my age group. So 4.5 inches is fine Mike.

      • Hi Kevron,

I know it seems odd, because we used to respond to questions about size, but we’ve since decided that we need to direct readers to a post we wrote just for boys going through puberty. You can find that information at Penis Size During Puberty.

        Hope that helps!

Don’t worry. I’m the same age and mine is small too. Girls don’t usually care that much about it as much as it might seem they do. We’ll be fine, not everyone is perfect.

I have a 6 month boy and his penis opening is still closed in his skin. There is a tiny hole and it’s not in the centre. Is this normal?

Hello, when measuring my son’s penis should I go by the stretched or the erect measurement? It appears that the erect measurement is about half an inch longer than the stretched measurement.

My son just turned 2 years old and his penis is 3 CM is this normal? When he was born a urologist questioned if he had micropenis the endocrinologist didn’t say, just that he was smaller than average.

I seriously doubt that your 5 year old son is 20 cm… did u pull his skin forward instead of back to measure? less than 7 cm would be about average.. 20 cm is very unlikely
