Penis Size

Penis size can be a genuine medical question. Here is a chart with normal penis size range by age from birth to puberty.

Question

How can I tell if my baby’s penis is the normal size for his age?

Dr. Greene's Answer

In determining penis size, the “stretched penile length” is far more important than the “relaxed length.” To evaluate size, simply stretch the penis gently and measure from the bone at the base all the way to the tip. Be sure to depress the surrounding fat pad to get all the way to the base. Here are the normal values:

Helllo I have a son who has just turned 10 and I my very concerned about the size of his penis.

I am 14 I have a lot of pubic hair but my penis erected is only [redacted]. Do I have micropenis? I’m also overweight but 173 cm tall.

Hello,

Puberty can start as late as 14. Here is a link to an article that describes different physical attributes at different stages of puberty to help you determine where you are relative to finishing puberty. Here is a post that addresses Penis Size During Puberty to help you make sense of it all.

I hope that helps.

My name is Joe and I’m 12. My penis is [redacted]. Is that ok or something?

Hi Joe,

Puberty can start as early as 9. IF you started that early, you could be completely through puberty by now. The size you provided would then be normal. Check this post to determine what other physical changes are in line with the stages of puberty.

I hope that helps.

Hello I have a son who has just turned 10 and he is very concerned about the size of his penis (as compared to his friends he says his is quite small). I may add that I actually did notice it was on the small side when he was younger. What can I do to reassure him as he is constantly asking what he can do to make it grow bigger. Thanks so much Kate

There is a lot of concern about how to go about enlarging the penis. It seems the Mayo Clinic has much research on this issue. Vacuum pumps if used safely and not too often or too long give temporary enlargement, it says on their site. As well as stretching. This should be done with medical advice.

For those concerned with their boy being homosexual, go with it. There is nothing you can do to change it, just accept it if they are. Religious groups have even stopped trying to convert them because it just does not work.

Is he the kind of kid that would be reassured by a doctor? If so, take him to his pediatrician and ask him to check your son. Maybe another man and one who “should know” about this will be able to tell him in a way he’ll listen.

Hi… So my penis is [redacted] and I am 14 years old. I know that it seems very large as 14-year-old boy to have a size like this.. but how would I know how big I would be in the future? Is there like a chart or something? How will I know how big my penis will be?

Thanks.

Hi Sam,

That’s an excellent question, but I don’t have the answer. I think it would really depend on what puberty stage you are in now. At 14, you could be in an early stage of puberty or you could be all the way through puberty.

You can check the chart on this page to get more info.

I hope that helps.

I think my two year old has a small penis. I’ve seen your chart but when I’m measuring it does the stretched length include the foreskin? His foreskin has not seperated from the glans yet so I’m really confused.

Im 11 and I think my penis is a bit to big [redacted] please tell me Im really worried I might have a problem. If anyone could help me out I woul really appreciate it

I am 17 years old my pein size is [redacted]. Is it ok? Can I do stretching?

My son Jacob is 12 and I told him that he could talk to me any time if he had questions about this sort of thing… just trying to be a good father. I was a bit uncomfortable bringing it up, but I didn’t want him to get any wrong information.

Now Jacob has been asking me a lot of questions about sex, and questions regarding his penis, his masturbation habits and other things. I was afraid that he might do that, and if it’s not bad enough that I know what my boy is doing in the shower and in his bedroom at night — and he’s been giving me too much information when he asks questions… like that he has a little bit of pubic hair already, he ejaculates and his exact penis size (since he was kind enough to blurt out his measurements to me) — I think he might have a homosexual or bisexual curiosity for other boys.

I’m not sure how to handle this but I don’t want Jacob getting the wrong information or being groomed by pedophiles while he’s surfing the web for answers and getting molested or kidnapped. He’s been doing a lot of digging online and I don’t like to see my son looking at pictures of naked men online to compare his penis to theirs so early in his sexual development. I’ve already caught him doing that… and I especially don’t want to end up walk in on Jacob while he’s masturbating… supposing that he might be doing that.

Did Jacob talk about anal sex or mention if he puts his finger (or any other foreign object) in his rectum when he masturbates? If he did then it’s very likely that he’s homosexual or at least bi-sexual… or… that he’s trying to massage his prostate when he masturbates. It could be that too. Teach Jake about protected sex… especially if he’s a gay boy! Don’t want your little guy to catch HIV if he starts playing around with other boys or men.

Thanks for the report. I see you quote from well established studies. It says 5.2 in for Adults.

Is the Fat Pad included or excluded? Let us say that the fat Pad is Exactly 1.22 in.

Does that mean the Average Erect length is 4.09 in. or was the Pubic Fat Pad already accounted for when the results were released ?

4.09 in. vs 5.2 in. makes all the difference i the world.

I’m 11, really 12, and my penis is about [redacted]. Is that ok?

Dear Anonymous,

Thanks for writing in.

During the time from about 10 to 18 years old, a lot is changing in the body. It happens at different rates for different people. This article doesn’t really go into that, but you can find out about penis size during puberty by clicking here.

Do you measure an uncircumcised penis differently (as in do I measure all the way to the tip or no?), or is the normal range different than the range above? Thanks!

Hello

When I measure my “stretched Length” for my penis, do I do it when it is erected or when its in rest position

In the rest (or flaccid) position.

I hope that helps.

Hi DrGreene
My son is now 18months and ever since he was born his penis hasnt grow it still looks the same size it did when we were in hospital. i’m really concerned about this whole issue. I tried telling the clinic staff when he was 10 weeks old and i was told to be axeggerating and that i should wait etlist when his a year old then i judge. But now i honestly think that i should have followed my heart. should i be worried?

It is okay and natural. His penis won’t really develop much until he gets older, usually at puberty around (13-years-old).

Hello sir,

I just ask you that i have a very tiny penis in rest position [redacted] so, please tell me is this a satisfying penile length for my housewife…..? or i need some treatment???????
reply me for best guidance.

Dear Danish,

Thank you for your sincere question. You have not found the best place to ask that question. We deal with pediatric issues.

Hello, I’m 11 years old and my penis is [redacted] erect, is this good or bad?

Hello,

The measurements for medical comparison are all done on the stretched penis, not erect. To measure stretch the penis gently and measure from the bone at the base all the way to the tip. Be sure to depress the surrounding fat pad to get all the way to the base. Using a wooden, metal or rigid plastic ruler is helpful to be able to depress the fat pad and get an accurate measurement.

I hope that helps.

My brothers penis is [redacted] and he is 10, is that good?

Hi Xack,

Penis size is related to stage of puberty.

Before Puberty – The average stretched length of the penis before puberty is somewhere between 2.1 and 2.9 inches*.

Adult – The average stretched length of the adult penis (after puberty is complete) is between 4.6 and 5.8 inches (though a more recent study of 6200 boys, mostly white, from Bulgaria, put the average at 3.1 to 4.3 inches. There’s a lot of variation between studies!)

At 10, he’s probably right on track.

Hi I’m 11 and I measured my penis stretched and its 2.94 inches is that big or small? Please reply

Hi Anonymous,

Great that you measured the stretched length. That’s very helpful. The answer is not straightforward, though. It really depends on what stage of puberty you are in:

Before Puberty – The average stretched length of the penis before puberty is somewhere between 2.1 and 2.9 inches*.

Adult – The average stretched length of the adult penis (after puberty is complete) is between 4.6 and 5.8 inches (though a more recent study of 6200 boys, mostly white, from Bulgaria, put the average at 3.1 to 4.3 inches. There’s a lot of variation between studies!)

At 11, you are likely just entering puberty, so you would be right on track. My best guess is this is the case.

I hope that helps.

My son is 3 and much smaller than this chart indicates he should be. He also has a bit of a hidden penis. The doctor has never said anything so I’ve thought my concerns were misplaced. Should I be concerned or will it grow into a normal size in puberty? I don’t want to give him a complex by talking about it in front of him.

Hello, im 15 and my penis is around half an inch soft, 2 inches hard, is that aright?

ic — I’d get that checked by a doctor. It might be alright, but sounds like it might be micro-penis.

Hi,am 18 and my penis is very short about [redacted], am alright and is it going to grow any further,am really worried, please answer me..

Hi Brian,

Some boys have finished puberty by 18, but not all. That makes a difference in penis size. In addition, it makes a difference how you measured the length of your penis.

You can get a lot of very specific information about both how to measure and puberty stage on this post Penis Size During Puberty.

I hope that helps.

Ethan,

At 13, with no public hair, you are considered “Tanner Stage 1” which means you haven’t started puberty yet. This can be normal at your age. Everyone develops at a different rate. As much as you don’t want to hear this, you are probably just a little behind your friends.

I hope that helps. Sorry if it doesn’t!

Is this with an errection or not?

Hi Dylan,

Thanks for writing in.

A stretched penis and an erect penis are NOT the same thing. Here are Dr. Greene’s directions for measuring the stretched penis: “To evaluate penis size, stretch the penis gently and measure from the bone at the base all the way to the tip. Be sure to depress the surrounding fat pad to get all the way to the base.”

My son was born with a hypospadius and had it repaired at 7 months old. A small pocket formed underneath so it was repaired by the same surgeon at age 3. My husband and I are concerned his penis isn’t growing because it looks the same as it did when he was a toddler. Sometimes he’s erect when he wakes up in the middle of the night to pee and it seems like a normal size for his age but since he’s our first child and only boy, we don’t know what’s normal. My husband is losing his mind thinking it will never grow and he’ll never have a normal life. Is this true? Should we be concerned?

I’m 11 and a half and my penis is [redacted] is that normal and that’s when it’s hard is that normal or too small?

Hi Bob,

Thanks for writing in.

Medically the measurements of penis length are for stretched length, which is different than erect length. Click here for instructions to conduct stretched length measurement of the penis.

I hope that helps.

Hello. I am 12 years old and my penis is around [redacted]. I wanted to know if this was normal or not, and if it will keep growing or not.

It’s hard to tell from age alone, but most boys haven’t finished puberty at 12. If you have not finished puberty, your penis will likely keep growing.

@MsGreene

Hi, I’m almost 12 years old and the size of my penis is about 6.5 cm. My friend, who had long ago reached the age of 12 is almost twice bigger penis than me. While my other friend who has nearly 11 years has a little bit smaller penis than me. The older friend is lower, and younger taller than me, oddly enough, is not it? None of us had entered puberty. I would like to ask whether the size of my penis normal? If you are not sure you should increase it (if so, which way?) Or should still wait? Also, I will present to my second skin separated from the glans and beneath it, while the menu is not separated at the bottom of the glans. Is this perhaps the reason of differences in size? Is there a way to separate the skin of the penis? Thank you in advance.

Hi im 12 and my erect penis size is [redacted]. Can you please tell me directly if I’m above, in, or below average without sending me that list you are sending to anyone else? Thank you!

JohnMcdonald,

Thanks for writing in.

At 12, you could be pre-pubescent, in the middle of puberty or all the way through puberty. Your stage of puberty will determine what is normal.

The list provided to others describes how to tell what stage of puberty you are in and based on that, what size is normal.

I hope that helps.

Hello! My name is Attila I’m 13 years old with a [redacted] should I be concerned. By the way I’m Hungarian and there the average size is 6.5 inches — can it be that? I don’t know.

Hello Attila,

Thanks for writing in. Here is the answer to your question:

1. The average stretched length of the penis before puberty is somewhere between 2.1 and 2.9 inches.
2. The average stretched length of the adult penis, after puberty is complete, is between 4.6 and 5.8 inches (though a more recent study of 6200 boys, mostly white, from Bulgaria, put the average at 3.1 to 4.3 inches).
3. During puberty it is normal for the stretched length to range between 3 and 4.5 inches.
4. It can be normal in our culture to begin puberty as early as 10 years old or as late as 14.9 years old.
5. Puberty is NOT set by your age, but by your Tanner Stage (the system doctors use to evaluate development during puberty).
6. If you are not in the normal range for your stage of development, or if your development is before age 10 or after age 14.9, it’s wise to discuss this with your pediatrician.
7. During puberty it is recommended that you have a physical exam once a year. Unless you are particularly concerned or are far outside the guidelines above, you can bring this up at your next annual exam.

I hope that helps.

3. The average stretched length of the adult penis, after puberty is complete, is between 4.6 and 5.8 inches (though a more recent study of 6200 boys, mostly white, from Bulgaria, put the average at 3.1 to 4.3 inches).
4. During puberty it is normal for the stretched length to range between 3 and 4.5 inches.
5. It can be normal in our culture to begin puberty as early as 10 years old or as late as 14.9 years old.
6. Puberty is NOT set by your age, but by your Tanner Stage (the system doctors use to evaluate development during puberty).
7. If you are not in the normal range for your stage of development, or if your development is before age 10 or after age 14.9, it’s wise to discuss this with your pediatrician.
8. During puberty it is recommended that you have a physical exam once a year. Unless you are particularly concerned or are far outside the guidelines above, you can bring this up at your next annual exam.

I hope that helps.

I recently decided to go ahead and transition. Slowly but surely I’m changing my life. I wear women’s clothing, makeup, and am seeing a therapist and psych dr to assist w transitioning. Since I was young I wished I woke up a girl. My parents found via pedal Dr that I had micro penis, and it basically hasn’t grown since I was 4-5 yo. Well my jr and HS years sucked, but I also learned to embrace it. I learned wearing panties is something I felt normal in. Recently decided to , w a female friend to be put into charity, stop masturbation, using estrogen lotion, rolling my penis in my ballsack, wearing tight panties, and I lost over an inch, and girth. The girl whose “dressing” me, took pics last night and it’s barely quarter of an inch. She said shaved, it looked like a newborn baby’s, and it does, she never knew a grown man could have one so tiny. Have you heard of this, and will this eventually effect my vagina if I go full sex change?

Hi, when you say stretched does that mean erected? And when I am not erected my size is almost nothing. I am twelve years old. It almost folds in when I am soft.

John,

Good question. Here’s the answers — no, the stretched is not the same as the erect penis. Dr. Greene says, “To evaluate penis size, stretch the penis gently and measure from the bone at the base all the way to the tip. Be sure to depress the surrounding fat pad to get all the way to the base.”

If your penis is really “almost nothing” it would be smart to have a physical exam and discuss this with your doctor.

Hi Gabriel,
Thanks for writing in! It would be wise to be examined by a pediatrician or pediatric urologist. He will be able to tell you if you are on track for his age and stage of development. If he’s not, the doctor will be able to help you with next steps.
For more information about stages of development, see Penis Size During Puberty.
Hope that helps!
