Bee Sting Reactions

Q

Can you describe the different kinds of reactions caused by bee stings?

drgreene

Bee venom contains at least nine different components that work together to cause reactions in those stung. When a bee injects its venom under the skin, the child may have immediate reactions (those symptoms beginning within 4 hours), delayed reactions (symptoms that don't appear until more than four hours after the sting), or both. Classifying the reactions is important both for immediate management and for predicting future problems (Allergy Principles and Practice, Mosby 2003).

Some immediate reactions are classified as local (a two - or three-inch area of swelling, redness and pain that lasts less than 24 hours). Others qualify as large local reactions (those that are larger -- often an entire limb -- or that last longer, but all symptoms are adjacent to stings). Systemic reactions are allergic responses distant from the sting and include symptoms such as hives, generalized itching, generalized swelling, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or anaphylactic shock -- a severe reaction involving most or all of these symptoms.

A sting on the forehead with swelling of the eyelids is a large local reaction, while a sting on the foot with swelling of the eyelids is a systemic reaction. Large local reactions are rarely serious and rarely portend future severe allergies. Systemic allergic reactions, though, are present and future warning signs.

A fourth type of immediate reaction is the toxic reaction, which can follow multiple stings. This is a direct result of bee venom, and not an allergic reaction. Symptoms can include fever, weakness, nausea, vomiting, and pain. Toxic reactions are rarely serious, but do sometimes sensitize the child and herald future allergic reactions.

Delayed reactions result when the body's immune system prepares for future stings, but some of the exuberant defense measures inadvertently turn against the body itself. These symptoms begin more than four hours after the initial sting. Delayed reactions include serum sickness (fever, weakness, rash, swelling, and/or intense itching which begin a week after the sting), nephrotic syndrome (inflammation of the kidney), neuritis (inflammation of the nerves), or inflammation of other parts of the body.

Delayed reaction rash!?

A couple weeks ago, I was stung by a yellow jacket behind my knee. It left it's stinger in me and I pulled it out. It hurt for several hours after (I was not in a place with any medications), I used ice on it. It swelled around the spot and eventually started itching, which lasted for several days after and a good 3 inch area around it turned red and swelled slightly as well. Last week I spent the week with my aunt, the sting had mostly became just a scab then. But I wound up scratching it once more while there and made it bleed. A few hours later I started to break out all over in some sort of rash, it looked like multiple bug bites or hives, they spread all over and were extremely itchy. Now almost a week after that, the rash has started to go away and the bumps are scabbing over though still slightly itchy. Earlier today I scratched one of the scabs too hard and it began to bleed. Within the hour the arm I had scratched has begun to break out in the rash again. Does anyone know if this could be related to the bee sting or something else? No type of topical medicine or even anti-histamine pills seems to help!

I am experiencing the same

I am experiencing the same problem you are having. I work in an ER and had a few Doctors look at my arm and was just told that it will take time to heal. It has been 3 months since I was stung by a very nasty agressive yellowjacket. I think I may end up seeing a dermatologist since it doesn't seem to be going away.

delayed reaction rash

I am having slightly similiar reaction, but without the rash. I was stung several months ago, camping, gathering firewood. I still have the scab, and it is itching constantly. ITs almost like there is a scab there but it doesnt come up/off. I wonder if it's poison that didnt dissolve? I have no idea but it is an oddity Im perplexed....It was a yellow jacket that stung me too.

My wife was stung by a yellow jacket on her finger two years ago. Two years later she still gets a reaction at the sting site that is symptomatic of the original sting.

Long term effect of multiple bee stings

Hello- My daughter experience multiple bee stings last August during a NOLS trip in Washington state. While she had no allergic reaction, she experienced severe facial swelling, which subsided within 72 hours, out in the wilderness. Her parents were NOT notified since they felt the situation was under control. While much time has passed, she experienced severe depression last fall and has now experienced multiple long-standing bouts of hives and impetigo. Is there any possible relationship between the multiples stings/venom in her system and these other problems she has experienced within the year? thank you. I can't seem to get an answer from our local doctors. Laura Levy

I live in Washington state I am undergoing a bee sting issue too

I was stung by a yellow jacket 1.5 weeks ago and my arm swelled up like a football. I got really sick and had to go to the hospital. They treated me with Prednazone and after 3 days the swelling went down but Now I am really sick, look ten years older. I am weak and tired all the time.I am very depressed and irritable. I don't know much about the bees here but they seem to have really nasty venom. I have heard comments about the possibility that bees feed on rattle snake remains. I don't know if there is any truth to it but I have been stung many times in my life (in Oregon) and never experienced anything like this. I was stung by only one bee. I really hope someone is investigating the possibility that there could be a potentially dangerous situation here.

Grandson stung in peach orchard

While picking peaches, as a outing before going back to school, my grandson (age 6) was stung 3 times (inside his boot on 1 leg). Never saw a bee(s), but the 3 stings appear to be what I would consider from a bee or wasp. Issue: 1 week later a blotchy rash is appearing on just the 1 leg that was stung. It does not itch or hurt, but concerned for possible underlying issues. Please advise.

Many years ago I had SEVERE

Many years ago I had SEVERE swelling and a streak running up my arm when I was stung on my hand by a yellow jacket. Since then I have been treated for stings by both the homeopathic treatment Apis and with BioSet acupuncture. I have since been stung by bees with a normal reaction. 1 1/2 days ago something stung my finger when I was deadheading daisies. Not bad swelling then, but today I have swelling, pain and itching and a dot that must be the stinger. I was interested in what the article said about delayed reactions.

hurting toes

How long does the swelling and pressure last? I was stung in between my second and third toes a week ago and the symptoms only seem to be getting worse. Is there something I can do to relieve my pain or must I let it running its course? Should, I be concerned that its getting worse?
