How Much Should a 6-Month Old Weigh?

Q

I have a now seven-month-old boy, who started crawling four days before his seven-month birthday. At six-month appointment, he weighed 17 pounds and 14 oz. I am guessing he weighs in the 18 pound, couple of oz's range. Is this normal or is it too low? I hear of some six-month-old babies that are 20 pounds or more. He is rather long, maybe about 28 inches plus.

Ashley, healthy babies come in many shapes and sizes. At six months, anywhere between 14 and 21 pounds is considered a healthy weight for boys. (Although, five percent of healthy boys weigh less than 14 pounds and five percent of healthy boys weight more than 21 pounds). Healthy boys who are 28 inches long, whatever their age, usually weigh 16 to 22 pounds. So 17 or 18 pounds is a great weight for an active boy to be!

Most adults who are reading this would rather they were on the slim, active side of their ideal weight range! Ashley, it sounds like you have a wonderful son, off to a great start. And it sounds like your crawling son has some exciting adventures and discoveries ahead.

my niece is 10lbs at 6 months old

I am really worried about my niece. She has started eating rice cereal in the last couple of weeks, but is still small, 10 lbs at 6 months old now. She is still wearing a lot of new born cloths. She has always spit up very bad. She seems alert and is starting to put weight on her feet, but her size still worries me...

your baby's weight comes

your baby's weight comes under 'healthy weight' column, so stop worrying. as long as she gains weight, she's healthy. about feeding - you cant force her, give her as much as she wants, dont force. the normal weight for 6 month baby anywhere between 14 to 21 lbs. have you started solids??
