How Much Should a 6-Month Old Weigh?

Dr. Greene’s Answer:

Ashley, healthy babies come in many shapes and sizes. At six months, anywhere between 14 and 21 pounds is considered a healthy weight for boys. (Although, five percent of healthy boys weigh less than 14 pounds and five percent of healthy boys weight more than 21 pounds). Healthy boys who are 28 inches long, whatever their age, usually weigh 16 to 22 pounds. So 17 or 18 pounds is a great weight for an active boy to be!

Most adults who are reading this would rather they were on the slim, active side of their ideal weight range! Ashley, it sounds like you have a wonderful son, off to a great start. And it sounds like your crawling son has some exciting adventures and discoveries ahead.

My baby boy is 6months. He weighs 8.4kg. He can sit, crawl and stand while holding on a support. I’m finding it a bit daunting to extend his feeding from breast milk to solid. He is recalcitrant when it comes to feeding on solids…

    • Edokhin,

At 6months old, it’s important for babies to work on the skills they will need longterm for eating solid foods and they learn to enjoy the taste of real, whole foods. But it’s not so important they get a lot of their calories from solids.

Dr. Greene suggests offering a variety of foods to babies between 6 months and a year old, but not forcing them to “take another bite”. Here is a link to his Quick Guide for Starting Solids.

      Thanks for writing in.

A baby’s normal weight at any given age is based on a combination of factors: Birth weight, height, and rate of growth.

Dr. Greene says, “In the first four to six months, a baby typically doubles her birth weight. She will triple her birth weight by the time she is a year old. Maximal brain growth also occurs during the first six months of life. The brain grows as much during a child’s first year as it will during the entire rest of her life.”

      I hope that helps.

My grand daughter 6 months weight is 6.7,is this normal?

      Added:
      • Rajesh,

The healthy weight of a baby is of much concern to parents. There are many factors to consider — Was the child born prematurely? What was her birth weight? What was the child’s birth length? Has she gained weight and length? Or is she barely holding her own? All these questions must be considered before determining a “normal” weight for a child.

With that said, 6.7 pounds is low for most 6-month-old babies. If this were my child, I would have her examined by a doctor to make sure she is on track.

        I hope that helps.

My Baby is 6months and is 6.5kg, he is 68cm in height. He doesn’t like eating, tried different baby food. Even baby puree,it’s always fight to eat them. What do I do for him to gain weight, or at least be eating well.

    Added:
    • Hi Juddie,

      Thanks for writing in.

At this age, babies get most of their calorie needs from breast milk or formula. The introduction of solid food is to teach babies to love the taste of foods. Most babies will not enjoy the taste of some solid foods at first, but after several tastes they will learn to love them.

Dr. Greene is a firm believer in letting kids set the amount of solid foods they eat. Speaking about the process of starting solids, he says, “… your son will begin to get the idea of closing his lips and swallowing. Once he does, you can begin to monitor the amount of food he needs. In order to determine this, (which is not a pre-determined amount, but varies from child to child) let him feed himself or, if you use a spoon, keep moving the spoon towards his mouth and look for signs that he is losing interest. If he turns his head away, clamps his lips shut, or appears bored, it is time to stop. Otherwise, keep moving the spoon to his mouth as long as he keeps opening it and looking happy.”
      I hope that helps.

    Added:
    • Michele,

Weight in infants is related to age and height. Your daughter’s doctor should be keeping a chart that tracks her growth curve over time. Have you asked him or her to show you the chart?

It’s important for your daughter to be exposed to the tastes of solid food during her first year, even she isn’t getting most of her calories from solids. You can get more information from Dr. Greene about starting solids here.

      Added:
      • Ashley,

To determine if a baby is underweight, you must look at weight and length AND determine if he is growing at a steady rate or if he is not gaining weight over time. Weight alone cannot determine if there is a problem.

        I hope that helps.

Breastmilk adjusts to your baby’s needs unlike formula. So 4oz of breastmilk is perfect! Mine only eats 4 ounces as well. As long as they are healthy, growing, and have enough wet diapers then all is good.

He crawls on both sides a lot, he tries too reach and grabs on the things that he wants. He is very happy and moves a lot. The doctor said he needs to drink at least 40 oz of milk a day and my son drink 10 oz of milk and 16 oz of solids that I made them myself. He was breastfed till 6 months and than I started him in formula. I have tried 4 different formulas and finally I’m using one now. He doesn’t really like formula. I don’t know what to do. How to make him gain weight. Maybe he is like me, I’ve always been on petite side when I was young. My first son was born 9lb 12onces and he was always big. He’s like my husband.

My son – aged 6 months weighs 5.8kgs (almost 13pounds). He was on the healthier side till 3 months, but has fallen ill twice (cough and cold at 3.5 and again at 5.5 months) and during the period drank little milk (Breast fed exclusively till 5months) and not taking well to solids . Hence, he lost some weight and subsequently, weight gain has been low. Till his illness at 3 months he was sleeping well (9-10hours of sleep in the night – with only one feed in the middle and few naps in the daytime. Since his illness – hes been sleeping 8-10 hours in the night and gets up almost every hour or two (except the initial 3 hour) and naps 5-6 times during the day for 15-20 mins. I am concerned abt his slow growth – is it taking a toll on his sleep pattern as well and thereby being a fussy and cranky baby. My pediatrician says i shouldnt be worried and he will catch up later. Any views??

Is your child breastfed or formula fed? If kids can sit up alone and are formula fed, Dr. Greene recommends starting solids as early as four months. Breastfed babies get a variety of flavors and lots of micronutrients from breastmilk so they can start a little later. Here is Dr. Greene’s Quick Guide to Starting Solids. This should help you on your journey.
