Headache Relief for Children

Biofeedback and relaxation training have proven effective in reducing the number, length, and severity of migraine headaches in children. A study published in the January 9th, 2001 issue of Neurology, involved teaching children deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and guided imagery techniques to practice at home three times a week and at the beginning of any headache. A computer-based biofeedback system showed the children how effectively they were relaxing. Children were able to achieve an average 3.7 degree Fahrenheit increase in skin temperature (as the body relaxes, skin temperature goes up). They averaged 3 fewer headache days per month, with each headache lasting 1.7 hours less, and remaining less severe throughout. And the only side effect was feeling more relaxed!
