Oh Candy! Can we really ask our kids to live without them? Well yes I suppose we can, we are already eating organically, reducing sugar, cutting out artificial additives all for the benefit of our health. However I have more than once sat in a Cafe with other moms and everyone drinking coffee and eating cream cake whilst feeding their toddlers organic purees and raisins. Dr Greene's advice to train the kids to eat healthily from weaning is perfect and it works, my kids love fruit and vegetables.
Summer fun can lead to some accidental side effects. It's always best to avoid sunburns, but once in a while they happen to all of us -- no matter how diligent we are about limiting time in the direct sun and applying copious amounts for sunscreen. If (when) it happens to you or your little ones, I recommend Jason Natural Cosmetics Cocoa Butter. The ingredient list is small -- 100% Pure Cocoa Butter. Apply it liberally and try not to be too hard on yourself for letting the sunburn happen!
I'm such a soup fan, and Kettle Cuisine soups are definitely some of my favorites. When you read the story of how they prepare their soups, you understand the dedication they have to serving full-flavored food made from high-quality, local, natural ingredients.
My father has been doing this a lot longer than I have. He co-founded Eden Foods back before most people were even thinking about natural and organic foods. Today he knows we’re all busy, families especially, but recognizes that making the right food choices makes a huge difference for both our families’ health and the environment.
Over the years I’ve learned that one of the biggest headaches for many moms is trying to ensure good nutrition for their children. My friend Domenica Catelli (our guest blogger at Perspectives!) wrote a cookbook that helps parents end the food battles and settling for hydrogenated, over-processed, junk food.
You may have seen Dr. Greene's wonderful article in Glamour Magazine this month entitled "5 Foods Every Woman Should Eat Organic ". Number 5 is beef. I've often heard him say, "If you eat beef, make it organic." Although I am a vegetarian several members of my family are not.
As a marathoner, I’m always looking for the best tasting, most healthful nutrition bars that I can throw into my bag when I train on the go. Some of my favorites have no more nutrition than a bag of M&Ms, and some of the healthy ones taste like a forest floor. And then there are the one-bite wonders… hardly satisfying after a 15 mile run.
We normally think of pizza as a high-fat, low nutrition food. But it doesn't need to be that way!
We love to add fresh vegetables from our garden (or from the farmer's market or the CSA or even the grocery store :-)) Some of our favorite additions are corn cut off the cob in big thick ribbons, fresh dug potatoes thinly sliced, and whole leaves of basil. Go heavy on the red sauce (lycopene is really good for you) and light on the cheese (great protein source, but you don't need as much as most pizza's have).
Most people don’t know this, but coffee beans are actually full of antioxidants! Unfortunately, the process of converting the natural beans into the critical ingredients of your morning coffee, the antioxidants are removed.
That’s why Dr. Greene and I were absolutely thrilled to find Caffe Sanora, an organic coffee that is processed to add the natural antioxidants back in. We met the woman who figured it out and started the company.
This is my favorite kitchen tool set for families with toddlers (or children of any age -- including me!). You twist and snap in the interchangeable blades to slice or julienne. It’s easy to handle and easy to wash – goes right into the dishwasher.
The Dancing Deer Baking Company is one of those organization’s I’d support even if their cookies weren’t full of double-squeal yummy-ness. They use all-natural ingredients, choose packaging and manufacturing techniques that are friendly to the environment, give back to the community and have a great time doing it.
I am so tickled by everyone's comments to my posts this week. Thank you all...
