MobyWrap -- Not just for new moms

I was recently on an airplane and saw a woman wearing a shawl very similar to the Simone Layne Pocket Shawl. I was so taken with it that I introduced myself and asked her about it. She said that it was perfect for travel because the button front kept it from falling off her shoulders, but still had the versatility of a shawl. How nice to find it online from our friends at Moby Wrap. I think I'll add it to my Mother's Day wish list :-)

Sara Snow's Fresh Living: The Essential Room-by-Room Guide to a Greener, Healthier Family and Home

We absolutely love Sara Snow! Dr. Greene was invited to work on the “Big Green Lies” project with her, and we’ve long admired the work she’s done to bring eco-friendly ideas to every family.

Kindle

Dr. Greene is not just a writer, he's a reader. At any given time, he's in the middle of at least four books. When he travels, four books add a lot of weight to his carry-on. If any of them are hard cover, look out. When the Amazon Kindle came out, it was on my list to buy for him. He's absolutely loves it! He finds the reading experience to be very pleasurable and has adjusted to the "electronic paper" just fine. He loves carrying multiple books at a time (I can only keep track of one or two story lines at once, but not Dr. Greene).

Look at Me

I wrote Robert Munsch and he even sent me an autographed book called Look at Me. It is one of my favorite books.

How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office

Dr. Greene’s discussion on using houseplants to filter indoor air led me on a search for more great resources. I discovered How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office, and I found it to be a wonderful guide for greening your home.

Based on research by NASA on filtering indoor pollutants, this book shares 50 of the best plants, with detailed information and beautiful pictures. It’ll inspire you to visit your local nursery!

Anna Getty's Pre & Post Natal Yoga Workout (2008)

Anna Getty is a wonderful person and I count it a privilege know her personally. As a member of the Getty family, Anna feels an extra responsibility to give to the community and the world. This DVD set is part of her gift to pregnant and recently pregnant women. Dr. Greene was so impressed with her approach to yoga for pregnancies (and after) that he even appears on her DVD!

Anna helps moms-to-be see how beautiful yoga can be. It is a workout, but it’s deeply peaceful and rejuvenating. She chose all the poses with care, knowing that they were safe for pregnancy and after.

How to Cook Everything: Simple Recipes for Great Food

At the Greene household, we love Mark Bittman. He’s a columnist for The New York Times, a regular on the “Today” show and shows up on public television in several series.

He says he’s not a chef and has never had any formal training (hasn’t even worked in a restaurant), but that makes him even better – because he’s an engaged home cook, just like we are! Our son Austin (13) is a faithful viewer!

What we love about his book is that it’s full of so many ideas! He gives you the basic info to “cook everything,” then lets you add your own touches.

Food to Live By

Myra Goodman is the co-founder of Earthbound Farm, a company that brings together 150 farmers who use organic farming methods. You’ve probably seen their salad mixes, snacks and produce at your local supermarkets.

We’ve gotten to know Myra, and we were thrilled when she came out with this cookbook. The book is full of beautiful pictures of farming, and it really makes you think about where your food came from.

Laurel's Kitchen

This book is one of the classics, and Dr. Greene has loved it since he was in college. Laurel Robertson created a library of really healthy recipes and added cooking resources that turn you into a cooking genius. She writes about the ingredients, giving you the complete picture to help you create healthy meals for your family. I love features like the chart that shares portions and cooking times for grains and beans.

The Real Food Daily Cookbook

Real Food Daily is one of my favorite restaurants in Southern California. It’s a vegetarian restaurant, and after eating there we had to buy the cookbook.

This cookbook is perfect for the vegetarian who is tired of tofu and cheese. Author Ann Gentry specializes in whole ingredients and fresh produce and lots of grains and uncommon proteins.

Your Organic Kitchen

The author of this beautiful cookbook, Jesse Ziff Cool, is the chef of three restaurants near Stanford, where Dr. Greene is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics for the School of Medicine. We got to know her as we discovered her meals made with fresh, seasonal organic food.

Jesse has a lot of cookbooks, and this one is rich with color pictures of the most beautiful dishes. When you flip through the pages, you are inspired to cook because the pages are just so beautiful you think. “I want that!”

Just in time for Valentines Day -- Chocolate: Pathway to the Gods

This beautiful book (and DVD) puts chocolate in the proper perspective -- heavenly! Author and archeologist Meredith Dreiss* and co-author Sharon Edgar Greenhill do an excellent job taking scientific information and putting it into language that is available to non-scientists without dumbing down. The photos are gorgeous and the history is really enjoyable. I recommend this book, a box of fine chocolate, and a bottle of good red wine for valentines day or any day

EarthBox

We don't own an EarthBox yet, but it's definitely on my birthday wish list. This garden box on wheels is a foolproof way to raise fresh tomatoes (my favorite!) or other veggies, even when you’re tight on space! EarthBox says you can double your yield of veggies, fruits, herbs and flowers with less fertilizer (yea!), less water and NO WEEDING!

We love the idea of getting kids involved in growing their own food, and this device lets you get started with a little planting mix, a few seedlings and water. I think every kid should grow their own garden at least once!!!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

A simple, bright, colorful book about the alphabet and a coconut tree. It has a great rhyming rhythm. I'd go with the original text - the board book is too short. My 14 month old loves this book and has learned a lot of her alphabet already from this fun to read book.

Goodnight Moon

A must for every household. This book is read over and over and over again in our house. What a great way to send your little ones off into dreamland, by saying goodnight to all of those friends in the room...and those outside as well.

Where the Sidewalk Ends

I feel it is an honor and my duty to present new babies with a copy of Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends. I bought this children’s poetry book for my first nephew, Jamison, several months before he actually made an appearance, and I wrapped it with much love and brought it to the hospital with me the day we welcomed him into this world.

Touchpoints

This marvelous book goes through the first five years by developmental stages. It also features practical advice on issues such as thumb sucking. Its real strength lies in the glorious glimpse Dr. Brazelton gives into the inner life of your child. It also provides rich insight into our inner lives as parents. Note: The volumes by Shelov and Brazelton, side by side, provide a thorough, balanced groundwork for raising babies and preschool children.

Raising Your Spirited Child

It's been a godsend to me! First, it's helped me to understand what a spirited child is, and second, that I have one, and that I am one. Best of all, it's helped me to better interact with my daughter, leading to fewer battles, a better-behaved child, and all-around family harmony. The bonus is that my daughter and I are beginning to enjoy one another again, and I'm hoping that this will lead to my non-verbal daughter gaining the courage to want to learn to talk more.
