Green Dreaming: Dog Beds Made With Planet Earth in Mind

Green Dreaming: Dog Beds Made With Planet Earth in Mind

Note: This blog posting is the first in series of five posts highlighting green products for our four-legged family members.

The American dog has slowly made its way from living inside the dog house to living inside the hearts of its owners. These days, dogs don’t sleep outside in a wooden dog house; instead they sleep on plush beds and dine on the highest-quality foods.

As dogs have become members of the family, they’ve been treated as such, too. Owners are providing only the best products for their pets, and now many of those product lines have greener alternatives.

One such product line is pet beds. There are endless options for purchasing a bed for your adoring four-legged friend, but an environmentally conscious consumer wants to choose something that is safe for Fido and for Mother Earth.

Stylish, dog-friendly, earth-friendly, and washable, the pet beds from West Paw Design are incredibly popular with savvy consumers. The interior contains a blend of recycled soda bottles and post-consumer recyclables, and the covering is made from organic cotton. These beds are made in the United States, and the Montana-based manufacturer estimates that their products save 200 tons of plastic soda bottles from the landfills every year. The company also employs other green practices to reduce waste in their shipping and manufacturing practices.

Worldwise Pooch Planet beds are made from plastic water bottles and post-consumer fill fibers. This unique structure offers resiliency, insulation, and cushioning. The colors, textures, and fabrics can be changed seasonally to keep your pooch comfortable no matter what the weather is like outdoors. This company strives to make an affordable, stylish product that helps save you some green while still choosing a green alternative.

Harry Barker brand pet beds, known as the Pottery Barn for pets, come in a myriad of patterns and styles from toile to stripes. They are made from 100 percent azo-free dye and are stuffed with hypo-allergenic recycled stuffing (made from a mix of plastic bottles and post-consumer fibers). The beds are channel quilted for longevity and structure. The slipcovers are 100 percent cotton, removable, and washable and are prewashed & preshrunk.
