How I Came to Host a Five-Course-Sit-Down-Fundraiser-Dinner for 27 People

I was chatting with some friends one day after dance class when suddenly I heard a voice coming out of my mouth and it said, “Oh, I’ll host one!”

You see, I’ve been dancing with the same dance company for (gulp) 27 years. It’s had a number of different names and incarnations over the years but the Artistic Director has always been my beloved dance teacher, Jean Isaacs. I didn’t start dancing until the ripe old age of 20. It seems silly now but in the dance world that’s really old for a girl to start dancing. Jean convinced me that it wasn’t too late and the rest is history. I took her workshop the summer I turned 21. I started dating my husband at that same time so it was an auspicious summer indeed.

2009 marks the 11th year we’ve been doing Trolley Dances. Every year a cast of more than 50 dancers performs world premiere site-specific choreography somewhere along the trolley line in San Diego. Hundreds of volunteers make it happen and thousands of people attend. It’s a great way to bring art to the public. One of the pieces this year is the "Reccesionist, Feminist, Waterless Car Wash" and it’s a lot of fun.

You can see more of Trolley Dances at http://www.sandiegodancetheater.org.

Every August we do your typical wine-and-cheese-silent-auction-fundraising-event. You’ve been to a million of them, right? It’s fine but none of us felt inspired to organize it. We started bouncing around some thoughts and came up with the idea of doing a series of intimate dinners at people’s homes instead. That’s when I heard that voice, “Oh, I’ll host one!”

Who said that? Has that ever happened to you? Tell us!

Nonprofit arts groups would never survive unless people like Amy stood up and said, "I'll do it!" Even if she was clouded in judgment by a dancers high!

I neglected to credit my friend, Joel Siegfried, reporter and photographer extraordinaire for the "car wash" photo above. Thank you Joel! Joel writes great articles on the airport and the arts (among other things). You'll find him on Facebook!
