Be Healthy and Happy

Editor’s Note: Dr. Greene and I were first introduced to this week’s extraordinary Guest Blogger when we read her book, Three Grin Salad. Aja King, now 12 years old, has an amazing outlook on life and a gift of communication. Please join me in welcoming her. She’d love to read your comments on her posts this week.

Hi. I’m Aja King. If you’re wondering how to pronounce my name it sounds just like the continent Asia – only it’s spelled differently. My dad really liked a band from the 70’s called “Steely Dan” and that was the name of one of their albums…Aja, that is.

I’m kind of new to blogging. I’ve read few blogs other people wrote but this is the first one I’ve written and I’m not quite sure about how I feel about it. My mom says I should just talk about things that are important to me as if I’m just talking to one of my best friends. And it could also be about some of the stuff in my book, Three Grin Salad. So, OK…here goes

One of the things I think is really important in anybody’s life is just to be happy. But happy is all about feeling good about things and it’s not something you can go buy at the corner store – or even at a big store. However, it would be cool: “Two large boxes of happy, please. One for my friend and one for me!”

So I was thinking about what makes me feel happy. First thing I noticed was I feel happier in the morning if I have had a good night’s sleep. I usually sleep really well, if I’m too excited about something or worried about something I don’t always sleep the best. And, I’m glad that I don’t often have bad dreams.

Most days I like to go to school, especially this past year because I have been in a French immersion program. I like learning about French. There are lots of things that I like to do that make me feel happy. I love to be with my horse, Darby and I love riding him and going in horse shows. I like singing with my mom, playing cards with my dad and spending time with my friends. I also feel happy doing artwork and things that let me be creative. All those things make me feel happy. I love to eat ethnic food like Chinese, Greek, Vietnamese and especially Thai food. I feel better when I eat healthy foods. Our family likes to say– “eat a rainbow everyday.” I sometimes like a treat too, but salads and fresh fruit are my favorites.

Most of the time I’m with people who are happy and that’s the most fun. But, sometimes I’m around people who aren’t very happy. I think the best thing to do is keep on being yourself and to be happy and hope some of your happy rubs off on them.

What makes you happy?

Hi Aja, I am happy to see

Hi Aja, I am happy to see your blog on the net. "I think the best thing to do is keep on being yourself and to be happy and hope some of your happy rubs off on them." That is great, Aja. I agree with you, and what make me happy is the same way I treat myself as you described above. Keep on going!

There are so many things that

There are so many things that make he happy, but one little thing I've noticed lately that makes me smile is a gentle, cool or slightly warm breeze on my face. I think it helps me connect to nature and to the moment. Several times recently I've felt that and just stopped what I was doing for a moment, and let myself experience all that was around me. I let time rush by, while I stood still and felt relaxed, in awe of our wonderful world, and at peace. I want to do that more often.

Hi Aja, I really thought that

Hi Aja, I really thought that when you stated "I think the best thing to do is keep on being yourself and to be happy and hope some of your happy rubs off on them." You were 100% right. To me happiness is all about a persons attitude and outlook on life. I mean, it may sound corny, but I always try to "look on the bright side" of any situation I can, there is a good side to almost anything. Thinking of the good that can come out of life goes a long way to helping me be happy. It is really important to me to always portray a happy face and do my best to install a positive attitude in my children. There are many trials in life that they will have to overcome and a positive attitude will help them be happy in what ever the future may bring.

First of all, I wanted to let

First of all, I wanted to let you know I have a very dear friend named Aja and thinking of her makes me smile inside. It is a beautiful name. Second, what makes me happy is knowing I am making a difference in someone else's life. That and photography (both looking at other people's work and going out and shooting my own)

I think it's amazing you

I think it's amazing you wrote your book at 10 and like Teri, cannot wait to hear more. As for what makes me happy: more and more I find it's the little things that make me happy, especially being a mom. Watching my children play and laugh makes me very happy. Seeing how incredibly interested they are in the world around them from the stars to the little ants. It makes me feel good to know I'm teaching them something. I also believe that a person who is unhappy, has the power to change it. All it takes is to find just the smallest thing, like a smile, that may not seem like much, but in the heart it can make a world of difference.

Hi there Aja! what a

Hi there Aja! what a wonderful concept, if we could only go to the corner store to pick up a nice box of happiness, one for my friend and one for me! I am a very simple person, what makes me happy is seeing my children eating healthy foods that i have either prepaired or grown myself. I also love seeing other young people enjoying life, swimming on hot days, in lakes and rivers and away from the blinking lights of television, Happiness to me is a warm blanket on a cold day, Christmas lights blinking on christmas eve.... I am sure i can go on like this for hours. I am sure i am going to enjoy your blog and i cannot wait to read more about your book, Three Grin Salad!
