This dvd has been invaluable to my son. It has been created for kids on the autistic spectrum. Kids with autism can find it hard to recognise facial expressions and as a result subtle hints of emotion.
My little boy asked me for "something that would teach him about faces" he said that sometimes he didn't understand the faces of other kids at school. I then tried to find him something like a book or a dvd.
The National Autism Society in the UK recommended this DVD. The dvd is a series of cartoon like episodes with a quiz at the end of the each episode. The series is based around toy vehicles all with their own personality and function, 8 different characters. They are part of a toy set in a child's bedroom. Each character has a human face rather than a cartoon face which makes it easy for children to relate it to real life.
The toys come to life when Jamie their owner is at school. There is a narrator which talks you through the episode, getting kids to focus on the faces and the relevant expression and also to talk them through the quiz at the end. Kids with or without autism would love to watch transporters.
I wasn't sure if it would work until one day when my little boy ran into the kitchen after watching an episode and informed me that he knew two boys at school actually didn't like him, he knew from their faces and transporters had taught him. Its sad in one sense but great in another that he is now able to tell the difference between someone who likes or doesn't like him, he is learning to understand subtle body language.
It is only one product and there are many different ones available and its a matter of chosing the one that is right for your child but for now this one is great for my little boy.
