Natural Insect Repellent

I'm so excited. We're taking the whole family to Yosemite this month. We live close by, so we're just going for one night, but still it's an amazing trip, and I'm really looking forward to it. There is one problem -- one of the kids is extremely allergic to mosquitoes. In fact, her last trip to Yosemite left her with one bite swollen to the size of a baseball.

I'm looking for some great, non-toxic solutions, and here are a couple that I want to try:

Beekman 1802 Bug Repellent Bars are made from goat’s milk, citronella, eucalyptus and other essential oils. Looks like a winning combination.

SunFeather Natural Soap is made with an olive oil base and uses insect-deterring essential oils. Unfortunately they don't list which essential oils, but I do like the price more than Beekman's.

Have you used one, or do you know of others? Leave a comment with your recommendation! I'll be sure to post an update about which one we use on our Yosemite trip.

Here's an addition:

Before I'd had a chance to actually purchase either of the two products mentioned above, we received recommendations for two additional products:

Amanda says, " Burt's Bee's has a great all natural insect repellent. You can buy it at grocery stores and drug stores. It smells good too!"

Sherri says, "I found that California Baby bug repellent is very effective." We found it online, too. At amazon.com it's selling for $11.43.

sunfeather insect repellent

Little Buggers works better than anything I have used. It is made from a pure essential oil blend of lemongrass, mint, citronella, thyme, and geranium in an olive oil base. Best of all a little goes a long way, one jar can last up to several weeks. You can get it at www.sproutbaby.com

Thanks for the Tip!

Ecomom Shopgirl -- Thanks for the tip! We're always looking for healthy products that perform as well (if not better) than their conventional counterparts.

My favorite thing to use are

My favorite thing to use are the Citronella bug repellent bracelets. They're only suitable for children old enough to be told not to chew on them, but provided that's the case, they help keep bugs away without having to apply or wash off anything, toxic or non. My mother swears by them.
