Spry Gum

Gum for a Parent Pick? I bet you’re thinking, “Ms. Greene, you've got to be kidding!”

Spry Gum is not your regular sticky, gooey pink bubble gum mess. Spry Gum contains xylitol, which actually helps in two surprising situations – ear infection and cavity prevention.

Xylitol is what they call a “tooth friendly” sugar. According to Dr. Greene, while other sugars tend to promote the growth of bacteria, xylitol has been proven to inhibit the growth of bacteria. In particular, it has been shown to be effective in preventing dental cavities by inhibiting Streptococcus mutans, the main bacteria responsible for cavities.

Since many ear infections are caused by a cousin of the cavity bacteria, researchers studied the effect of chewing xylitol gum on ear infections in kids and found xylitol may help there, too!

But you don’t have to tell your kids that Spry Gum is good for them. It tastes great and is fun to chew, and they’ll never know they’re staying healthy!

Xlear Spry Chewing Gum w/Xylitol is available online at Amazon.com

Help with Braces

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking for -- a recommendation for a water pick, perhaps?

My son has braces and we did purchase a water pick at the recommendation of our dentist. I'm not sure how helpful it was.

The two things that have really helped are a high quality electric toothbrush (we bought the Oral-B Triumph) and a special flossing tool called the Platypus Orthodontic Flosser.

Here are links to both:
