Depression in Children

Surprisingly, 1 to 3% of preschool age children may be depressed. Former Surgeon General David Satcher has said that we have a children's mental health crisis because 8 out of 10 kids with real mental health problems remain undiagnosed. Early detection holds promise for helping to change the trajectory of kids' lives.

This is such a tragedy ...

This is such a tragedy. I wonder about all the kids who've gone undiagnosed for so many years. Maybe now they can get help.

So Glad You Are Talking About This

My husband first had suicidal thoughts...at age 7. He didn't tell anyone and no one knew how depressed he was as he struggled through his childhood. Finally, as an adult, he got help and appropriate medication now he feels great. BTW, he had no "reason" to be depressed - he has wonderful parents and was not mistreated in anyway, but there is a strong family history of depression and anxiety. He wouldn't wish this feeling on anyone and is glad there is more information now about childhood depression.
