MRSA Ear Infections

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staph aureus) is the name of a feared, antibiotic resistant, species of bacteria that can cause serious infections, especially in hospitals or in those whose immune systems have been compromised. But MRSA is now turning up in the ears of otherwise healthy children in otherwise healthy communities, according to a study in the October 2005 Archives of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. Ear drainage is common after ear tubes are placed in children. The authors of this study obtained cultures of this discharge, and found that MRSA is now commonly present. The good news is that, when it is isolated to the ear, the MRSA is usually easy to treat with topical antibiotic ear drops. But far more important than treating the MRSA is preventing this infection, which can be quite serious if it spreads.

The authors suggest that minimizing oral antibiotic use for ear infections to situations where the antibiotics are important can help prevent MRSA. The kids whose ear drainage had MRSA in the study averaged having had twice as many courses of oral antibiotics, lasting twice as long, as did their counterparts whose ear drainage featured much more benign bacteria. The AAP 2004 guidelines for treating ear infections offer clear instructions on which children need oral antibiotics for their ear infections, and which children (most children) will do better without them.

MRSA ear infection in Mineare's Patient

My Dr. Suspects my chronic double ear infection to be mrsa. I have been through several courses of oral and topical otic solution treatments, and finally Dr. says it might be MRSA. I need to find a place to test that doesn't charge much since I have no job or Health insurance. Nor can I even get insurance due to many pre-existing diseases. He took the swab but had no in house lab. I have yet to find a place near me that will test for free or cheap. I also have Mineares disease which is why Dr. wasn't worried at first since ear infections are common in persons with that disease. Still just treating with oxifloxicin since I'm highly allergic to many common antibiotics. can anyone offer suggestions? Don't know what else to do.

Possible mrsa ear infection

My daughter is 28 months old and had ear tubes place about a year ago. Working great until this past Oct. Has had continued ear infection in right ear since mid Oct. Right tube was removed early Dec. Thought to be harboring bacteria. One wk post op, infection still present. Two cultures have come back negative for any growth???? Post op check 12-16-2010 got placed on Clindamycin 75mg/5ml tid 10days and vigamox drops. Was told drops are designed for eyes but used in ears?? Doc mentioned possible mrsa infection. Worried about infection spreading? Doc wants to do CT scan after holidays if drainage still present. Currently in process of getting second opinion. What are your thoughts/opinions of this persistent infection. My daughter acts normal, without fever & consistently answers "No" to the question, "Does your ear hurt?" ANy comments or direction to literature would be appreciated. Emily

I asked the dr to please test this time mabe the wrong medicine .he went ahead and put me on 135 dollar med two days ago and called me this morning to say I have mersa . it came back from the ear swab test . and they are changing meds again and giving me a special soap and body soap like surgurey patients get . and something to swab my nose with .
