To 'vex' means to bring trouble, distress, or agitation -- to irritate or to annoy. A 'vexing' problem is one that is troubling, baffling or puzzling. That reminds me of ADHD! At a time when we are hearing reports of a few kids selling their Ritalin to others at school, I am glad that a new, non-stimulant alternative is being studied. The November 5, 2001 issue of Pediatrics contained a report about Atomoxetine. 297 children received either the drug or a placebo. Those who received atomoxetine had consistently better reduction of ADHD symptoms and consistent improvement in social and family functioning. About 5% discontinued the medicine due to side effects. Continuing research into ADHD is an important service for the many kids diagnosed with it (and for their parents). There is no one solution discovered to date that is best for everyone diagnosed with this vexing condition.
