The original Hippocratic Oath was the soul of medicine. For the past 2,500 years doctors have sworn to keep this Oath. But the central preoccupation of the Hippocratic Oath is the promise to keep the knowledge of medicine and healing a carefully guarded secret. By maintaining this secrecy and control, doctors were promised satisfying careers and continued respect. Now is the time to do away with the Hippocratic Oath. Or rather, to put this exalted oath on a shelf of honor in medical history, to be replaced not by an updated version, but by a fundamentally new oath to launch us into the future of health. I wrote the Millennium Health Oath to wake us up and move us forward.
