Spitting up is common in babies, but a few infants can hardly keep anything down. When the valve at the bottom of the stomach gets too tight, we call it pyloric stenosis, a condition that affects about 0.3% of babies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a cluster of cases in 1999 in babies who had received erythromycin. I've also seen more cases of pyloric stenosis in 1999 than I usually do, (even though I am practicing less)- and these babies had not received erythromycin. Coincidence?
