Cow's Milk and Diabetes

Pediatric News (33(8):2, 1999), has reported on a significant new study coming out of Finland. Up until now, the relationship between cow's milk and type 1 diabetes has been controversial. This is the first carefully designed, controlled prospective study, and it shows a dramatic reduction in diabetes in high-risk children who avoided cow's milk products for the first 6-8 months of life. If there is type 1 diabetes in the immediate family, I would recommend avoiding cow's milk-based formulas. It'll take awhile for scientists to sort out the details, but the early word is -- yes, cow protein can trigger diabetes in those who are genetically susceptible.

We got to be very careful in taking in any substances or products that may increase risk of diabetes. Well, American Idol had a minor shake up and the Girls Night was postponed because one of the contestants, Crystal Bowersox, had complications due to her diabetes and had to go to the hospital. She's alright now, and cleared to sing – and I'd bet a payday loans worth that she'll probably go Top 5, barring disaster. She's very different from the usual female entrants into Am Idol, and she's been forthcoming (blatant, in fact) that she's doing the show for her son, to help make a better life for him. Granted, she has beaten that horse to death – every other sentence out of her mouth is about her kid, which gets real old – but she is certainly entertaining.

PresleyB - I hadn't heard that diabetes was the reason for Crystal's hospitalization. Is she open about her diabetes? Is it type 1 or 2? We meed more people speaking out about diabetes and other chronic diseases.
