petit mal seizures

My son, 11, had an EEG to help determine if he is having petit mal seizures, however, he did not have any seizures during the test. Will this test be a waste of time or will a diagnosis still be possible.

My daughter has them, and

My daughter has them, and they've never shown up during any of the 3 EEG's we've had done. Hers are just brief staring spells. She's had 4 seizures that caused her entire body to stiffen, and they scared her tremendously. She has been on seizure meds for a year now and that seems to help with the frequency and duration of the seizures. Her neurologist does want to admit her for a 24 hour video eeg test to confirm the diagnosis.
