From what I know, the Epstein-Barr Virus (that causes Mono) can be caught in childhood and then only comes about as a cold. When it is caught in adolescence, the symptoms are more severe. It also depends on the person. I caught mono in college and missed a whole semester. The virus also remains dormant in your body for the rest of your life.
