ear tubes

Hi. My five month old has never past a hearing test and is getting ready to have ear tubes placed. Is it possible that the fluid in his ears has caused permanant damage or do most infants hear fine after the fluid is removed.

Have you read Dr. Greene's in

Have you read Dr. Greene's in depth article on ear infections and Ear Tubes? If not, you will find it to be very helpful.

I'm not saying it's not

I'm not saying it's not possible, but I have never heard of fluid causing permanent damage to a child's hearing. I would think the pressure of the fluid would have to be pretty high for that to happen. Even (or especially) if the pressure was high, the eustacian tubes should do their job and drain the fluid out of the ears. Generally, when a child has fluid on their ears, it keeps the ear drum from moving like it should, thus making it sound as if your underwater. During early stages of development, this can affect speech development. It's a good thing that you are getting tubes placed so early!
