Hello,
Most baby bottles/bottle parts today are clearly labeled BPA free. However, they also say that when washing use top rack of dishwasher only. Many dishwashers today have dual spray bars (top and bottle) with a heating pump instead of an element so that all dishes get sprayed with the hot water, not just the bottom dishes. Why do bottle companies say "top shelf only?" Is it because of risk of hurting the bottle parts or will the plastic break down when exposed to excessive heat possibly putting my baby at risk or receiving harmful plastic chemicals? What is the maximum temperature a "top rack only" bottle can with stain in the dishwasher?

Hi Jim,
I went to our friends at BornFree to get the answer to your question. Here it is:The reason that most baby bottle manufacturers state “top rack dishwashing” is because with repeated heat (sterilization, microwaving, and dishwashing) many manufacturers bottles can slightly warp in shape. The concern is leaking and that the components no longer interface correctly together (The collar, the valve, the nipple and bottle). This is especially true of manufacturers who have a thin walled construction.
The classic Born Free bottle is made out of PPE material that can withstand much higher heat temperatures and is safe for bottom rack dishwashing-a benefit of our premium positioning. Even our deco bottle that is made out of poly pro, which is similar to the majority of manufacturers on the market, has a much thicker wall structure. Many manufacturers go to a thinner wall construction to save cost. We have a thicker wall construction and it truly is a testament to our overall quality and reliability.

Hope that helps!
