BLW

Hi Dr Greene Just wondering what your thoughts are on BLW - my six-month old is an avid eater & at the moment I am making purees out of cooked organic vegetables & fruits. I have tried offering steamed carrots sticks or chunks of apple as per the BLW recommendations & my baby does have a good gnaw at them, however most of the food comes out or he ends up gagging. I am concerned about the risk of choking following this protocol, however according to BLW aficionados, babies are less likely choke because they are in control of what goes in their mouths. Rapley also believes that spoon feeding babies leads to obesity (due to forced over-eating) & in the long-term fussy eaters. Thoughts?

Maybe your baby isn't quite

Maybe your baby isn't quite ready yet? We are doing BLW and our little one didn't start eating and swallowing until 7 months. He still gags if he breaks off too big a piece, but he works it around in his mouth and either spits out or is able to swallow. The entire concept of BLW is to follow the baby, and remember that breastmilk or formula should be their primary nutrition before one. Mealtime should be fun and focused on learning new tastes and textures.
