My 6 week old son will not have a bowel movement without rectal stimulation. He pushes, grunts, and cries for hours with no progress. He has been doing this since about 2 weeks old. We tried juice first. That got the bowels moving (you could hear his belly rumbling) but he still would not push it out on his own. I wait severl hours to 2-3 days without "helping" him, but he rarely has success on his own. There have been a handful of days that he was able to go on his own. He is currently on lactulose and suppositories. Does this seem like a coordination issue? How long between bowel movements should I give him to go on his own? When can we expect this to get better? How long should I give him the lactulose (even when it doesn't seem to be helping)? Can he get dependant on the lactulose? How do I know if he's able to go on his own without the medicine? This has been a tough situation because he doesn't sleep well when he needs to go. He cries a lot like it's hurting. Currently, he's only going 1-2 times daily if I help him. If I don't, he probably won't go at all for 3-4 days. Thank you.

ok first off i would not be
ok first off i would not be giving a baby that young any type of lactulose or suppositories or even juice at that,,, number one it could be his formula alot of babys get moderate to sevier constipation due to formula, number two what are you exactly feeding him,, a newborn should only be having formula no baby food that could be a problem on its own if in fact you are giving him baby food, number three try a little bit of karo syrup that helps, and if that deosnt help MOST DEFFINATLY contact your docter cause if he hasnt been using the bathroom at all then something needs to be done right away
