caring for the next generation

Hi there! Grab a cup of coffee or tea from the shelf and sit down with me. It will give me a chance to tell you about myself. My "face name" is Sherry and I will be seen around here as Belsamm.

I live close to the sun in New Mexico, high in the mountains where the air is reported to be thin, near where I was born and raised.  My husband figured out that being one of the few natives to my area with no desire to move anywhere else in the world, I am a yucca and my roots go WAY deep into the desert floor in search of water.

I taught school for 14 years before becoming a stay-at-home mom about 7 years ago when we moved to the mountains and had not only our three children but also my nephew and two nieces. As time went on, we gave birth to another son.  For one year, we had 7 children from 8th grade to newborn living with us. One of my nieces moved out to return to live with her dad, then last year the other niece moved to live with her mom, leaving us with 5 kids.  Now we have an 18 year-old boy (my nephew), a 15 year-old daughter, a 12 year-old daughter, an 8 year-old son, and a 5 year-old son.

I work from home for Dr. Greene, as well as helping out from time to time at my parents’ store a few miles away. I also try to help out where I can with my 88 and 89 year-old grandparents.

Our oldest 3 children are in public school in our small town and are having a great time. We homeschool the 8 year-old who is in 3rd grade this year and are beginning work with the 5 year-old at whatever point he wants to work. For the last 2 years it has been a strange world as we have been fairly active with the local homeschool groups and my husband has been the local PTO president.  Nearly the whole family, including my guys, (all but the 18-year-old who is too cool) dance with our local dance studio. Ballet, tap and jazz -- all three have kind of become a way of life and exercise for us. Our kids also play various sports including volleyball, basketball and football.  We are very active in our local church as well.

To add to the confusion, this is a second marriage for both my husband and I.  We met while I was teaching school. He was doing a program at the school I worked at once a week for 2 years.  We met, became friends, and when my ex-husband decided to move on to other worlds, his friendship is what got me and my two little girls through it. Do I believe in love at first sight?  No, I don't. You can’t know who is going to be your best friend that fast and I advocate marrying no one but your best friend.

As for pets, yes, we have them. We went without for a couple years but we couldn't stand not having the extra company, so we have 2 aquariums full of fish and a Jack Russell terrier puppy. I can honestly say that everyone should “SAY NO TO DRUGS!” While I was on pain meds with an abscessed tooth, I became a fish and a dog owner. I am NOT a small dog person, I am NOT a house-dog person, I am NOT interested in having a pure-bred dog, and I don't have a yard.  But when Daddy calls and says, "These people have the cutest puppy and they don't want him anymore. They want to know if we can find it a home or they are taking it to the pound. Want a puppy?" In my drug-induced state I say, "Sure. I would LOVE to have a puppy.” And now I honestly don't know what we would do with out him.

I am an avid reader and one of the things I love about homeschooling is getting to share great literature with my family. We read aloud for about an hour before bed each night and even the 18 year-old drifts upstairs for some reason or another while I am reading out loud. In the last year, we’ve read all 4 Harry Potter books, The Hobbit, A Wrinkle in Time, The Prince and the Pauper, A Christmas Carol, and hopefully we’ll complete the whole Lord of the Rings Trilogy before the next movie comes out. Yes, even my 5 year-old has been glued to each story.  We don't have TV at our house, so they are stuck with mom and their imaginations for entertainment.

Our world seems pretty hectic, spontaneous and just downright weird to most people. On top of hubby's day job, he is also a volunteer fire fighter, as well as an EMT on the volunteer service and is involved in Search and Rescue. I am the official fire department "Coffee Girl." (I make the best coffee around. They beg for it.) I answer phones and direct traffic during emergencies.  I have no desire to play with fire but feel the need to do my part somewhere. As you can see, we pretty much live "on call."

I am a 42 year-old mother of a 5 year-old. That seems to be pretty quirky around here. I am quirky in that I just don't seem to fit in well with any of the "groups" around me, so I am kind of a loner. I am quirky in that I am a native to the area I live in, while about 90% of the residents have moved here from somewhere else, mostly with the military.

Do you have a TV in your bedroom, maybe at the foot of your bed? One of my aquariums is a 28-gallon aquarium that sits on a wooden stand in the spot most of my friends have TVs.  It is one of the most beautiful "night lights" I have ever found. Did I mention that I have always wanted to have a crossbow, a falcon, and a black stallion?

Pet peeves? 15 year-old daughters with attitude. I am pretty easy going unless you try to sit beside me while chewing ice. I will HAVE to move.

This is just a little bit about me but the most important thing here is that I love working at DrGreene.com for several reasons. One of them is that with my husband’s interest in the medical world, while I don't want to actually play with the yucky parts, I can be of just as much help to people right here. I love being able to get parents the information they need in the middle of the night when that sweet baby is suddenly sick.

I love getting to know the people who visit the site. I’ve formed bonds that last a long time. I enjoy conversing from my home where I can also be a full-time wife and mommy.  What a blessing it is to me to know that I have comforted someone or have given them a clue as to what to talk to their doctor about.  Being a parent is so hard when you are far away from your own extended family and I like to think that we can provide some of that warmth and seasoned information that would come from parents, aunts and uncles that you just don’t live close enough to.

You will find me floating all over the place but I am almost always in the discussion areas and chat. Don't hesitate to grab me and ask any questions you might have. If I can’t answer them, I will get you to those who can.

Now, while I pour my 2nd cup of coffee for the day, relax and tell me about you. I really want to get to know you.........
