What is Baby Acne?

Q

My one-month-old son's cheeks are very rough. It looked at first like a rash. There are small bumps that are sometimes red and irritated looking, and other times it looks very clear, but the roughness is still there. Is that a rash or is it baby acne? Is there something I can do to treat it?

To many parents' dismay, their beautiful newborn's face breaks out with red bumps. One of the most common causes for red bumps on an infant’s face is baby acne. It tends to occur at about the same age as the baby's peak gas production and fussiness. How attractive! (This all coincides with parents' maximum sleep deprivation.) Parents are often quite concerned both about how these bumps look and about their significance.

In baby acne, these bumps, are quickly fleeting evidence of the connection between your body and your son's. During the final moments of your pregnancy, your hormones crossed the placenta into your son. Among other things (such as maturing his lungs), this stimulated the oil glands on your son's skin, eventually giving rise to the baby acne.

Fleshy or red pimples can be present at birth, but typically appear at 3 to 4 weeks of age. They occur predominately on the cheeks, but are also quite common on the forehead and chin. Whiteheads are sometimes present. This condition tends to come and go until the baby is between 4 and 6 months old.

The acne will be most prominent when your son is hot or fussy (increased blood flow to the skin), or when his skin is irritated. If his skin comes into contact with cloth laundered in harsh detergents, or becomes wet from saliva or milk that he has spit up, the condition may appear worse for several days.

Gently cleanse his face once a day with water, and perhaps a mild baby soap. Oils and lotions do not help, and may aggravate the condition. If the acne is severe or lasts beyond 6 months, your pediatrician may prescribe a mild medicine to help.

Otherwise, you can expect that the rash will soon be a memory. The oil glands will disappear, and you won't see the acne again until you turn around once, and he's a teenager. This time the acne will be evidence that his own hormones are turning him into a man.

baby acne

I realize this is an old post but thought my info could help others reading it. My baby also had a very bad case of this- his face was all scabby and it looked painful. my dr said to keep it clean and dry and to use hydro cortisone ointment as the cream could burn, and a thin layer of Aquaphore. I found it minimally helpful, and became desperate. I started to use my face wash and lotion as it was organic and cleared my face up when i was pregnant and nothing else worked. It is called Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean™ Face Wash - Original Oily and Combination Skin. It has tea tree oil in it. as long as I wash/lotion his face once a day he stays clear. If I get lazy or forget I can tell he starts to break out again. Don't use the cleaning pads as they burn a bit. I also put just a little Aquaphore on as a protecting layer or on dry spots. This combination works like magic!

Milk Bumps Baby Acne

My 7&1/2 week old has milk bumps all over her face. Is it safe to wipe her face with an hypoallergenic baby wipe? They are unscented & it says on the packaging that it is safe to wipe baby's face with. Could this be irritating her skin as well?

Beware the beguiling scents of baby products

That oh-so-fresh aroma of some baby products is often a brew of synthetic volatile chemicals designed to tempt parents -- even though they might be harsh on baby skin or lungs. My advice? If the catch-all word 'fragrance' is on the ingredient list (as in some Baby Magic detergents and Johnson and Johnson body washes)don't use it on or around Baby -- especially if asthma, eczema, or allergies run in the family. The word 'fragrance' is used legally to disguise specific ingredients they don't want to list on the label. Having said that, while baby acne can be irritated by detergents or body washes, it's a hormone surge that causes it -- much like happens in teens. It usually peaks at 3-6 weeks old and resolves on its own.

Don't use Dreft! Most babies are allergic try a Free and Clear

Dreft is loaded with perfumes, it's only good thing for babies is it's marketing campaign. Use the least amount of detergent and use a Free and Clear version that most brands make. Go light on the fabric softener which is loaded with harsh chemicals and use the extra rinse cycle on your wash if You have it. By 6 months you should be able to wash your baby's clothes like everyone else. During the first few months I wash my clothes in the Free and Clear too as the baby nuzzles me the most. If your baby has eczema ask your dr about baths with a tiny amount of bleach, it works wonders. Learned this one when the chlorinated pool water cleared up my daughters problem areas.
